Students celebrate "Learn from Lei Feng Day".

According to a recent survey of more than 100 college students conducted by Chinese Social Sci­ence Today(CSST), 63.2% of the respondents knew that March 5 is “Learn from Lei Feng Day” and 88% knew the lyrics to the song “Follow the Good Example of Lei Feng.”

These results indicate that the practical actions taken by Lei Feng still resonate with China’s populace more than half a century after the young hero’s passing. One expert remarked that the value of the spirit of Lei Feng is becoming increas­ingly evident in China’s process of comprehensively deepening reform. The forms and means through which the spirit of Lei Feng is promoted urgently need to be innovated, however, the expert expressed.

Scholars have suggested that Lei Feng can continue to bear relevance if people “narrow the psychological distance be­tween the public and his good example”, or in other words go beyond praising Lei Feng orally and genuinely and spiritually strive to learn from Lei Feng.
