Tropical rainforests occupy a sizable portion of Latin America, assuming some of the most vital functions in the planet’s ecology. Tropical rainforests also occupy an important place in our imagination. This article describes the history of the tropical rainforest, a precious and awe-inspiring biome, from the nineteenth to the twentieth centuries, and reviews advances in research on tropical rainforests in environmental history to date.
