Environmental Decision Making in Japanese History

Even for disaster-prone Japan, the devastation caused by the 2011 tsunami and nuclear disaster in the Tohoku region of Japan is still fresh in our minds. Since ancient times, environmental problems have existed in human societies regardless of the stage of history. When confronted with these environmental problems, how do we make decisions, in what relationships do we make them, and what kind of social systems do these decision-making processes produce, or what kind of economic changes do they cause? For example, can we find the best and most reliable solutions to modern energy and zero-emission problems? This paper will respond to questions such as these and demonstrate the sustainability and resilience of local living spaces by discussing a variety of events in Japanese and world history involving the relationship between nature and humans.
