From “Space” to “Place”: A Cognitive Perspective Study on Contemporary Urban Spatial Remodeling and Cultural Regeneration

(Abstract)

Wang Shujiao

The remodeling space often falls into the realistic dilemma of absence of cultural root and affective identification in contemporary urban construction, because of neglect or simplifying the humanistic dimension of urban space. It is of great significance to understand the city and its space regeneration with multiple-dimensions, through organizing the proposition and derivation of the concept of “place” by Heidegger and Neuberschutz, etc., and discussing the transformation of cognitive perspective from “space” to “place.” First, the concept of “place” introduces us to grasp the city and its space in a more holistic way; second, it highlights the importance of local culture and knowledge system during spatial renewal; last, it has encouraged an idea of urban spatial regeneration which focuses on the daily life of the city.
