Crises of inequality: Shifting power for a new eco-social contract
(Abstract)
UNRISD
The article examines the serious crises and inequality currently facing the world and calls for large-scale systemic change to dissipate this situation. Inequality is an amplifier of multiple crises-economic, social, political, and ecological-and a consequence of the crises. Addressing this problem requires a new eco-social contract and a new development model with a vision of justice, equality and sustainability. This model has three key pillars: alternative economic approaches, transformative social policies based on an equitable fiscal compact, and a reconfiguration of multilateralism to strengthen solidarity. Achieving this transformative change will require realigning existing power structures, creating new alliances, and co-creating a new eco-social contract to achieve climate justice and social justice.
