Global warming and disaster management in the Pacific islands
(Abstract)
Paul D’Arcy
The Pacific islands are vulnerable to natural disasters and global warming. For instance, the land area would shrink rapidly and many reefs be drown when a typhoon comes. Sometimes, a super typhoon would destroy a whole country. In the article, I recall the communities’ strategies on the Pacific island in response to natural disasters in history, such as diversified crops and temporary migration to the less hit islands while waiting for resilience of the home island. In addition, I also pay attention to the threat from the climate change in recent years and its influences on the Pacific islands and the Pacific Rim.
