(Abstract)
Karina Batthyány
There exist serious structural problems in the societies and economies in the Latin America and the Caribbean, which have become one of the most unequal regions in the world. We should investigate in the challenges for the efforts of the region toward modernisation. The meaning of the word, “modernisation”, in the Latin America and the Caribbean may be very different from that in China today. The differences in the regard are obvious. The former implemented the “modernisation project” of neo-liberalist model imposed by “Washington Consensus”, and experienced a process of peripherisation, while the latter stepped on a special path with Chinese characteristics, which frees 800 million people from extreme poverty and becomes one of the drivers of the world economy.
