The Return, Application, and Value of Traditional Chinese Aesthetic Resources: Examining Ge Fei’s Neoclassical Style from His Recent Works

(Abstract)

In Ge Feis early avant-garde writings, many elements of traditional Chinese culture exist in an implicit way. In the Jiangnan Trilogy, Ge Fei has created a kind of Chinese poetic conception which is integrated into modern ideas. This notion has been more subtly reflected in his recent work Yueluo huangsi (The Moon Sets at the Temple), which shows a distinctive neoclassical style. This “Chinese poetic conception” has two sides. It contains the potential to stimulate creative inspiration, but may also go astray.
