A Brief Discussion of Chen Yan’s View of Literature and his Methodology

Chen Yan’s literary outlook and methodology can be discussed from the perspectives of vertical influence of modern literature and horizontal comparison of contemporary literature, as well as from the two dimensions of fiction and drama, namely “for life” and “in life.” He advocates literature engaging in life, transforming society, and realist writing, making efforts to open up the space for literary writing, such as writing about the city of Xi’an and writing about theater. These useful experiences are worthy of study.
