Exploring Hainan development after reform and opening up
Hainan As I See It
Hainan As I See It records the process of Hainan Province’s reform and opening up in different periods and from different perspectives, showcasing the significance of constructing a pilot free trade zone and building a free trade port with Chinese characteristics. It is a special remark on Hainan Province in the context of the Chinese history of reform and opening up since 1978.
Hainan had embarked on its arduous journey towards reform and opening up even before the establishment of Hainan Province and a provincial-level special economic zone in April 1988. In June 2020, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council issued the Overall Plan for the Construction of Hainan Free Trade Port, announcing the construction of a free trade port in Hainan. The rapid development of Hainan epitomizes the reform and opening up in China, and the past decades witnessed Hainan’s successful transformation from a backward island to the forefront of reform and opening up.
The book consists of 49 articles written by Zhong Yechang, president of the Hainan Federation of Social Science Associations and president of Hainan Academy of Social Sciences. The first article looks into the future of the export strategies of special economic zones in China. The last one is themed on comprehensively deepening reform and opening up in the new era, inspired by the spirit of an important speech delivered by President Xi Jinping at a gathering to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the founding of Hainan Province and the Hainan Special Economic Zone on April 13 in 2018.
The book covers almost every aspect of the Hainan economy after reform and opening up. It pays attention to the research topics of Hainan’s development models, such as the model of opening up, a pilot free trade zone, a special economic zone, a special customs territory and methods of drawing on the development model of Hong Kong.
The book also focuses on Hainan’s economic development strategies, including its export strategy, development strategy, economic take-off, export-oriented economy, the “great global circulation” strategy and an international tourism island. In addition, a wide range of specific economic issues are discussed in the book, such as tourism development, the reform of financial systems, industrial policies, price reform, the allocation of productive forces and urbanization.
