The cognitions of peace and security and the mechanism-building for governance of peace and security on the African continent  (Abstract)

Habibillah Ben Daoud

The peace and security in Africa are hot topics today. They were also the topics the first-generational leaders of African nations began to discuss when they got independence one after another in 1960s.  Up to now, African leaders still struggle to maintain peace and security on the continent.  Since 1960s, African countries have been making efforts to develop co-operations with other nations, but history shows that some powers have been influencing on the security, economy, politics, institutions and societies of African countries in different ways and for different reasons. There have also appeared problems inside some countries. Africans have to try to set up their own institutions of peace and security for co-defense against external forces due to frequent frictions between African countries after their independence, new challenges emerging in international patterns and African nations’ doubts about UN’s role. The problems left over from the past, and the challenges from international situations, urge African leaders to pursue the right to make decisions on African affairs. The article examines African peace and security in an overall way. It tries to analyze the evolution of the African perspectives of peace and security, how the institutions for security in AU work, and how they cooperate with international partners to keep the order and stability on the continent.
