In a paper in the most recent issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Jonathan Stallings et al. argue that the current metrics to determine citation ratings are outdated, in part because of the increase in interdisciplinary collaboration. The authors of“Determining scientific impact using a collaboration index” propose a schedule of new metrics that give a more comprehensive and more sensitive measure of a paper’s impact. Comparing their new metric to the standard H-factor, they found it to be a more precise gauge of scientific merit when evaluating randomly selected biomedical engineering articles written by faculty at top universities.
