The Status of Mohism in Fine Chinese Traditional Culture
(Abstract)
Zhu Chuanqi
Among the achievements of the splendid civilization formed by the Chinese people in the course of their 5,000 years of historical evolution is Mohism. As an important representative of the pre-Qin hundred schools of thought, the Mohists advocated the ideas of jian ai (universal love) and “fei gong” (against offensive warfare). Mohist classics contain rich political, philosophical, scientific, cultural and ethical ideas. Expounding the status, nature and role of research on Mohism in inheriting and promoting “fine Chinese traditional culture” offers a diversified integration of multicultural elements. Alongside Confucianism, Mohism enjoyed the historical status of a leading philosophy. Its distinctive features are superior to those of other schools and this is of great significance for our analysis and promotion of the contemporary value of Mohism.
