Towards diversifying studies in environmental history: an introduction to the Global Environmental History lectures

Based on our course “World Environmental History”, the Department of History in Sun Yat-sen University invited eleven environmental historians known in the world to give a series of online lectures in Spring 2021. The lectures were not arranged as a mosaic mix of new studies. Instead, they are summaries of the history of the discipline and theorectical reflections. Environmental History has emerged for more than a half century, and it began in China thirty years ago. It is essential for our colleagues to make clear its original ambition, schools, traditions and trends. It is also imperative for us to find both answers to the fundamental problems we face today and directions for us to go further.
