Dunhuang Mogao Caves The project to develop a special zone for protecting Chinese cultural heritage in Gansu has gained the official approval of the State Council. It will be the second National Cultural Demonstration Area in western China since the establishment of Qujiang New District in Xi’an in 2003. According to the State Council, the project will contain the Dunhuang Mogao Caves Protective Utilization Program, the renovation of Labrang Monastery in Xiahe County, the Majiayao Culture Industrial Park of Lintao County, the Qingyang Folk Culture Industrial Park, and the Yellow River Stone Forest Scenic Area, among other areas. The entire project includes 287 sub-projects. The total investment is 193.2 billion RMB and this year’s intended cost is 23.2 billion RMB.
