Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov delivered video speeches to a high-level think tank forum jointly convened by the two countries on June 1.

Marking the 20th anniversary of the signing of the China-Russia Treaty of Good-neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation, Wang extended congratulations and heartfelt thanks to both countries’ strategic and academic circles, who have long been committed to the cause of China-Russia friendship. He said that the treaty has laid a solid legal foundation for the long-term, sound, and stable development of China-Russia relations.

China will continue to carry forward the spirit of the treaty with Russia, promote cooperation in a wider field and on a deeper level, Wang said. The two countries will be responsible major countries that take the lead in upholding equality, integrity, cooperation, and compliance with law. They will march toward their great rejuvenation side by side, and constantly add new momentum to building a community of shared future for mankind.

Lavrov said signing the treaty 20 years ago opened a new chapter in the friendship between the two peoples. The treaty will further play an important role in deepening strategic cooperation between Russia and China.

The forum was jointly organized by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), under the theme “China and Russia: Cooperation in a New Era and Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Signing of the China-Russia Treaty of Good-neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation.”

To further deepen China-Russia relations in the new era, CASS President Xie Fuzhan said that the two sides need to continue to increase political mutual trust, and strengthen strategic cooperation, thus building a political foundation for the development of bilateral relations. Both sides need to comprehensively deepen practical cooperation and continue to create new momentum for cooperation in traditional and emerging fields. In addition, the two countries need to work together to improve global governance and make the international order more reasonable and just.

Taking the 20th anniversary of the Treaty’s signing as a new starting point, CASS looks forward to further deepening exchanges and expanding cooperation with RIAC, Xie said. Xie suggested both sides make use of the China-Russia high-level think tank forum to contribute more wisdom and strength to the in-depth development of China-Russia relations in the new era.

RIAC President Igor Ivanov said that both countries should conduct long-term and uninterrupted research on the Treaty, creatively develop the terms, and provide new ideas for further promoting the development of a comprehensive strategic partnership featuring equality and mutual trust.

The forum also released the Collected Works which celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Treaty’s signing, jointly organized and compiled by CASS and RIAC. High-level diplomats and well-known scholars from China and Russia were invited to contribute to the collection, which was published in Chinese and Russian, and released in China and Russia, respectively. The essays provide in-depth explanations of the Treaty’s historical background and contemporary relevance, and comprehensively summarize the experience of developing China-Russia relations. The collection also provides suggestions for promoting the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era.
