On May 17, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) held a conference to commemorate five years since Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, delivered his speech at the Seminar on Philosophy and Social Sciences on May 17, 2016.
CASS President Xie Fuzhan, who is also secretary of the leading Party members’ group at CASS, said that Xi’s speech put forward the strategic task of accelerating the construction of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese features, scientifically answered a series of fundamental questions related to the long-term development of philosophy and social sciences in our country, and pointed the way forward while providing fundamental guidance for the prosperity and development of philosophy and social sciences in the new era. The development of China’s philosophy and social sciences has thus opened a new chapter.
On May 17, 2017, Xi sent a congratulatory letter marking the 40th anniversary of the establishment of CASS. On January 2 and April 9, 2019, Xi also sent congratulatory letters lauding the establishment of the Chinese Academy of History and the China-Africa Institute at CASS, respectively. This fully demonstrates that Xi and the CPC Central Committee attach great importance to the cause of philosophy and social sciences.
Over the past five years, the leading Party members’ group at CASS led all CASS comrades to adhere to Marxism as the guidance, accelerating the construction of a disciplinary system, academic system, and discourse system of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics, and strengthening the construction of new-type think tanks with Chinese characteristics, Xie said. CASS has facilitated academic research, developed Chinese theories, and disseminated Chinese ideas, fully embracing its role as a think tank for the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, achieving high-quality results, and nurturing high-level talent. The work produced by CASS has achieved remarkable results.
CASS Vice President Gao Xiang, who is also deputy secretary of the leading Party members’ group at CASS, said that CASS, as the highest academic institution and comprehensive research center for Chinese philosophy and social sciences under the direct leadership of the CPC Central Committee and directly under the State Council, must strengthen and improve the Party’s overall leadership of philosophy and social sciences. CASS should adhere to the guidance of Marxism that is developing, ensuring that it serves the people and serves socialism. CASS should also strengthen the construction of a talent team, pioneer, and innovate, actively building a disciplinary system, academic system, and discourse system of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics.
