Mao Dun’s Nationalism and the Ethic of Narration in Midnight
(Abstract)
Fang Weibao
There can be found the transformation of the ethic of narration in the creation process of Midnight. During the process, the social science knowledge, literary language, class analysis, and nationalistic complex are overlapped with each other and constituted the several native threads. Against the backdrop of this, the major protagonist had been depicted as the nationalistic entrepreneur surrounded by a series of contentious counterparts and an able enemy. The tragic end of the hero in Midnight can be attributed to the unstable writer’s position. The hasty ending of Midnight is also related to this unstable status.
