CASS welcomes new president and vice-president

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council of the Chinese Government recently announced Wang Weiguang as the new president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) replacing Chen Kuiyuan, and Zhao Shengxuan as vice president and deputy secretary of the Party Group of CASS (ministerial rank).

  Wang Weiguang

Wang Weiguang, president of CASS, secretary of the Party Group of CASS, president of the Presidium of CASS Academic Divisions. Wang Weiguang holds a doctorate in philosophy. He is a professor, PhD advisor and CASS member.  Prior to join CASS, Wang was vice president of the Central Party School. He is a member of the 18th CPC Central Committee and was previously an alternate member of 17th CPC Central Committee. Wang is also the president of the Chinese Association of Dialectic Materialism Study and a chief expert and member of the advisory board for the Marxism Theoretical Research and Construction Project.He has been honored with the “Outstanding Contributor among Chinese Doctoral Degree Recipients” award and is also entitled with a special allowance from the State Council. His research focuses on Marxist theory, philosophy and major theoretical and pragmatic issues regarding socialism with Chinese characteristics. His principal books include: On Interest, Social Conflicts, and Collected Lectures of Wang Weiguang.

 Zhao Shengxuan

Zhao Shengxuan, vice-president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and the deputy-secretary of the Party Group of the CASS (ministerial rank). Zhao is a native of Shanxian in Shangdong Province. In May 1974, Zhao joined the Communist Party of China (CPC), starting his career in January the following year. He is a graduate of Renmin University, where he majored in philosophy. Previously, Zhao served as deputy director and director of the Investigation and Research Office at the General Office of the Central Committee of the CPC (CCCPC) from 1991 to 2007, and deputy director of the General Office of the CCCPC from January 2007 to April 2013. From July 2011 to April 2013, he also served as secretary of the Institution’s Party Committee of the General Office of the CCCPC.

Zhao is a member of the Standing Committee of the 12th National People’s Congress (NPC) and was previously a member of the Standing Committee of the 11th NPC.  He is also a member of the Legislative Affairs Office of the Standing Committee of the 12th NPC.
