A flood of refugees at the gates of Europe

A flood of refugees at their gates;
A crisis for the European states.
The cause is quite elementary:
The colonial history of last century.
None can wash their hands
As innocents flee the war-torn lands.
Rich Western countries should show humanity
And lend a hand in this time of calamity.
It is unwise to resort to force,
Financial aid is the appropriate course.

Recently, hundreds of thousands of refugees fled from their homelands, seeking haven in Europe.
People have emigrated from Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen in response to the ever-worsening security situation in the region. A total of about 11 million asylum-seekers from Syria and Iraq have become destitute, homeless or displaced from their motherlands.
Some have argued that aid to countries where refugees originate could reduce the number of refugees. However, when interviewed by the website of German national daily newspaper Die Welt, the director of German Development Institute Dirk Messners said that aid is not a panacea. Nevertheless, he still argues that it is necessary to support countries in crisis and revitalize their economy through aid.
