The Encyclopedia of Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage, the first of its kind, was released on June 12, as a prelude to national Cultural Heritage Day on the following day.

At the launch ceremony and seminar co-organized by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and the Chinese Folk Literature and Art Association, scholars spoke highly of the first results of the encyclopedia, namely the volumes of Epics, Inheritors and Representative Projects.

The encyclopedia represents the wisdom of predecessors, the pursuit of academic excellence and the preservation of traditional culture, scholars in attendance said. They added that using the encyclopedia format to reflect China’s achievements in intangible cultural heritage research and its social influence indicates progress in protection and research in this field.

The encyclopedia is a project started by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles Publishing House in 2012 and funded by the China Literature and Art Foundation. Many prominent scholars from the Chinese Folk Literature and Art Association, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and other institutions spent two years on the project. They not only comprehensively reviewed past academic achievements in China and abroad but also drew upon the latest research findings.
