Books on China are at display.
Xi Jinping: The Goverance of China dominates the spotlight at the event.
China organized a series of activities with the theme “Reading China, Co-creating the Future” at the BookExpo America 2015, which was held in New York from May 27 to 29.
China was the guest of honor at the event’s Global Market Forum. The Chinese publishing industry has never orchestrated interchange activities on such a large scale in the US since the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
Steve Rosata, director of the expo, said China brought a number of wonderful cultural programs and products to the event. Because China and America are the two biggest book markets, the cooperation between them at the event has profound significance, he said.
A highlight of the expo, a seminar on Xi Jinping: The Governance of China attracted a crowd of foreign publishers and readers. The book has been translated into English, French, Russian, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Japanese.
The book has sold 4.5 million copies worldwide since it was published in October 2014. The Chinese Ambassador to US Cui Tiankai said the book opens a window into the mind of President Xi and the country he serves.
Because they are drivers of global development, it is vital for China and America to understand and communicate with each other, Cui said. Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger sent a congratulatory letter to the seminar, stating that Xi’s proposal on the shared responsibility and partnership of rival countries is a pioneering approach to the evolution of world order and a cornerstone in the next era of global development.
China Social Sciences Press (CSSP) launched the Understanding China Series at the expo. The series is a vehicle for comprehending the status quo of the country and a bridge to China-foreign cultural exchanges, said Wu Shangzhi, deputy director-general of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television.
The series aims to tell China’s stories, promote Chinese perspectives and strengthen China’s stance through English, the lingua franca, said Zhao Jianying, president and chief editor of CSSP.
The Social Sciences Academic Press (SSAP) held a press conference announcing the construction of an international platform for academic exchanges and the releases of several foreign language publications. SSAP and the Springer Group co-published Chinese Dream and Development Research Series.
At the conference, separate books of the series were released, including The Road to Rule of Law in Modern China, Research on China’s Systematic Support for its Outbound Investment, and so on. In addition, People’s Literature Publishing House and Amazon co-organized a forum titled Cross-cultural Transmission of Literature in the Era of New Media. The Canada-based Royal Collins Publishing Group signed an agreement with Southern Publishing and Media to form a partnership to publish and promote English versions of works by renowned Chinese authors.
Launched in 1947, the BookExpo America is the largest publishing industry fair for showcasing upcoming titles and selling international and subsidiary rights.
