Elaboration, Integration and Transformation: On the Study of Western Philosophy from the Chinese Perspective

(Abstract)

Han Donghui

Over the past century, the study of Western philosophy in China has operated under the fundamental premise of “starting from China.” While its objects of study originate in the West, the subjects and ultimate goals of this research are firmly rooted in China. From this foundation, three key dimensions—elaboration, integration, and transformation—have emerged as guiding principles for this field. First, Western philosophy is approached with the aim of “seeking the truth of knowledge and the authenticity of reason,” serving as both foundation and guiding direction. Second, emphasis is placed on linking Western philosophical history and schools of thought, integrating Chinese and Western philosophical traditions, and fostering the creative interplay between philosophical research and innovation. Finally, the ultimate aim is to achieve a creative transformation and innovative development of Western philosophy within the Chinese context. These three dimensions—interconnected and mutually reinforcing—collectively reflect both the significant achievements and future trajectory of China’s engagement with Western philosophy.
