General Secretary Xi Jinping’s Speech at the Forum on Literature and Art upheld a Marxist position, using theoretical innovation to reinforce the guiding role of Marxist literary theory in contemporary China. The speech was grounded in the realities of literary and artistic work, accurately diagnosing issues and guiding contemporary Chinese literature and art into a new era. In addition, it emphasized that the flourishing of literature and art was a key prerequisite for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, reflecting a deep understanding of the essential characteristics of Chinese civilization and expressing a desire for China’s peaceful rise through a Chinese approach to modernization. The speech addressed many aspects of Xi Jinping Thought on Culture, laying the groundwork for propositions such as “the cultural subjectivity of Chinese civilization” and “the second integration.”
