A Brief Discussion on the Epistemological Basis of Chinese Gender Sociology

(Abstract)

Su Yihui

This article discusses the epistemological foundations of gender sociology in China, starting from the two constituent elements of gender sociology, namely “feminism” and “sociology.” It argues that gender sociology treats “gender” as a social relation or social structure, and completes the human cognitive jigsaw puzzle by presenting the truths and voices of neglected groups that have been obscured in gender relations and gender structures. Its epistemological advantage is that it allows for a more “comprehensive” and “impartial” understanding of the world. It also analyses the triple tensions in the development of Chinese gender sociology and the efforts of Chinese researchers and practitioners to deal with them.
