Greening Migration History: Considering a New Research Plan

(Abstract)

Marco Armiero

It has never been easy to blend environmental history with migration history, or rather, with the environment and migration. To date, environmental historians have normally studied “more-than-human migrants” within the framework of “invasive species ecologies,” while research on human mobility has focused on the Age of Discovery and carried out within the framework of empires. What about modern and contemporary immigration? What is the environmental history of millions of people who have migrated around the world? What kind of multispecies assemblages have these immigrants created? This article attempts to respond to these questions.
