The Predicament of Western Interpretations of Authors’ Intention and the Response of Chinese Scholars

(Abstract)

Li Jiansheng

In recent years, Zhang Jiang has been the first to raise the question of “can the author die,” “is the ‘intention’ present or not” and the role of authors’ intention in the interpretation of meaning, which has been actively discussed by some scholars. Based on an analysis of the predicament of Western authors’ intention theory and the theoretical responses of Chinese scholars in recent years, it is possible to identify how to view the role of authors’ intention in meaning interpretation and where the focus of meaning interpretation lies.
