Towards “Chanquan Xue”: Ontological Interpretation in the Perspective of Public Hermeneutics

(Abstract)

The most important question that public hermeneutics poses to Gadamer is: whether understanding is interpretation. Understanding is not an ontology that can be elucidated by returning from language to itself, but by first clarifying the comprehensive experiential nature of Dao. “Chanquan xue” combines the ontological analysis of “reason,” “nature” and “emotion” with the methodological inquiry of “exposition,” “interpretation” and “explanation,” presenting the unity of ontology and function under public hermeneutic perspective, the difference between Chinese and Western philosophy and aesthetics is no longer only a difference in the concept of ontology, but also a difference in the approach to understanding ontology. In this way, we can achieve complementarity, borrowing and integration between Eastern wisdom and Western reason.
