This paper analyzes advertisements placed in Overseas Chinese Students in Japan as one way to understand the newspaper’s and its parent organization’s management, financial condition and scope of readers and social networks. The newspaper was the bulletin of the organization known as the Chinese Students Association in Japan (CSAJ). The organization was established on May 22, 1946 as a nationwide group of international students from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan studying in the country. An analysis of the types of businesses featured in the advertisements revealed that many advertisers were Chinese-related companies in Japan. Advertisements from these sources increased whenever the CSAJ faced financial difficulties, which suggests that they asked these Chinese-related businesses for assistance during those time periods.
