Discussions of the “emotionalism” of the French revolutionaries run the risk of oversimplifying the “political factions” in history. A study of Robespierre’s life shows us that these views constitute his conception of the self, while also demonstrating the profound emotional and political implications of the vivid, shared expression of the self.
