Europe’s “Strategic Autonomy” revisited

(Abstract)

Zhao Jizhou

Today, our world, our times, and history are changing in ways like never before. It is essential to review Europe’s “strategic autonomy” now. First, the EU has made some achievements in building a common defence force in recent years, but European security is still inseparable from the US-led NATO. Second, in terms of the evolution of relations between Europe and the United States, the transatlantic alliance has been somewhat “repaired” since the Biden administration took office. Third, affected by the Ukraine crisis and the “backlash” of the sanctions against Russia, Europe has become more dependent on the United States in the areas of security and energy, and it remains to be seen how far its “strategic autonomy” will go.
