Inspirations from China’s poverty alleviation experience
(Abstract)
Bert Hofman
In 2021, China celebrated the complete eradication of extreme poverty, and its work on poverty reduction has a truly global significance. Although China’s unique history, its initial conditions and political system all play a role in shaping its experience in poverty reduction, it is hard but not impossible to draw lessons for other countries. On how to approach particular problems that China was facing at that particular point in time, Chinese authorities and intellectuals studied and reflected the experiences and lessons from other countries, but did not regard them as inrefutable truths. Copying China’s model doesn’t make any sense, but learning from China’s successful practices and experience, is a very important task for the scholars studying China.
